Vascular Legs

Vascular Legs

Spider leg veins are lesions that occur when the leg vein valves fail to close properly, and dependant on the extent of the reflux, may cover small or large areas. Usually red or purple in colour, they can develop anywhere on the body but are commonly seen on the upper thigh, and around the ankles. Spider veins are common, especially in patients over the age of 50. Spider leg veins are not only considered a cosmetic issue; if left untreated they could pose further health implications including varicose veins, blood clots, skin pigmentation and even ulceration of the lower legs.

There are two main strategies for treating leg veins. Endovenous laser ablation is usually performed on larger varicose veins, whilst sclerotherapy can help with small leg veins. For spider veins too small to cannulate in sclerotherapy, laser offers an effective alternative. Vascular lasers treat spider veins by heating and thereby destroying the vein whilst leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. Blood is rerouted through healthy veins nearby, and the skin’s natural appearance is restored.

The PRO Yellow is the most advanced laser for the treatment of spider leg veins, allowing for fast and effective treatment whilst simultaneously reducing side effects. Thanks to its special wavelength of 577 nm, less energy is required to achieve predictable result. As 577nm is situated at the maximum peak of absorption in haemoglobin, competing chromophore absorption effects are lower and therefore is also suitable for the treatment of darker skin types.

The Bios Superbium is a multi-application platform device with options for Nd:YAG laser, providing users the ability to perform a wide range of vascular treatments, including but not limited to spider leg veins.
